Ernest Hemingway s Arms And The Sun Also Rises - 2140 Words
Hemingway is one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century. In his works A Farewell to Arms and The Sun Also Rises, Hemingway uses damaged soldiers to reveal war in its real nature and how it effects people. He tries to show to people that war is not made out how it looks in movies, posters, etc. He also feels that war is unproductive by nature and that most goals in war are mostly pointless. He also shows readers that military conflict often causes people to have shallow values and to hide their pain. One big factor in Hemingwayââ¬â¢s works is the loss of innocences in a time of war. Not just with soldiers but with innocent bystanders in a time of war. Henry a innocent young man sets up the disillusionment. Heâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦He constantly says that Henry is a hero even though Henry was hit by an artillery while eating rich food. Also Rinaldi keeps praising Henery, saying that his ââ¬Å"heroic actions gives him the privilege of earning medals. T hen in For Whom the Bell Tolls, Robert Jordan shares that he feels that his actions are important to the war effort. He calls his heroic action of blowing up a bridge a turning point for Spanish Civil War and the human race. He is very selfish and thinks only of his valor and convinces himself to forget other thoughts when it crosses his mind. ââ¬Å"Robert Jordan paysâ⬠¦ in order to assure the success of a Loyalist offensive, although he already knows that the offensive will be a failureâ⬠(Cowley ). This shows that soldiers live very mundane lives than what people believe that they have. They do not experience the heroism in war like most people believe that it is. Hemingway is not writing his works to be a anti-war view. He has experience of war he had parts in both the First and Second World War. His works are helping people to see the truth about war. One way a reader can see the truth is in A Farewell to Arms where Henry experiences the damage that it causes, thr ough the artillery strike that destroys his knee. The injury affects him throughout the rest of the war/story. By the end of this story he losses his primary distraction from the war, Catherine. He is alone and scarred. The major tells Henry that it has

Positive Response Action Free Essays
Positive Response Action: The ultimate goal of website communication Summary Understanding and knowing the audience is the key to delivering the message to them. The key to harnessing the Internetââ¬â¢s power is to understand all of the people with whom one will communicate with. Every website should have one overriding, generic entity goal to achieve positive response action. We will write a custom essay sample on Positive Response Action or any similar topic only for you Order Now Both content and usability can be viewed as as cognitive ? triggers? , gateways to self-gratification and consequent PRA. Every website may be classified into one of three sender motivation categories: individual, strategic stakeholder communication, non-strategic communication. Content of the article Knowing the audience is important in every field and the key to the success, for example in marketing and public relations if you want to sell your product you need to know your customersââ¬â¢ needs and wants, and PR specialists need to know the audience too if they want their message to be delivered in a campaign or programme. And the key to a successful website is knowing the audence in the same way. If you know the audience you can deliver and present your message and information more efficiently and are more likely to achieve your goals. Positive response action should be the goal of a website otherwise there is no point of the site. Positive response action was defined by six website visitor positive outputs for example the time spent on the website which should tell if the visitor is satisfied but it could be also questioned, because maybe s/he is not satisfied and is spending longer time on the site because s/he canââ¬â¢ find the information s/he wanted. Examples from practice The objective of an individualââ¬â¢s website might simply be so s/he can say they have one: Many individuals and also companies have websites which are often half-finished and donââ¬â¢t contain a message and are just existing in the Internet. A website without a meaning could leave a wrong first impression of the company for example and leave the visitor unsatisfied. Graphics take often a massive amounts of memory: I have noticed that due to low-speed Internet many people find it irritating to use the social networking site Myspace, it takes a lot of time to load the graphics as I have experienced myself and also read from other usersââ¬â¢ comments, and many have stopped using the site because of that. ââ¬Å¾Make sure your website is fast to access and is not slowed down by large images or fancy gadgetsâ⬠(Chung) : ââ¬Å¾Myspace is set up so that anyone can customize the layout and colors of their profile page with virtually no restrictions. As Myspace users are usually not skilled web developers, this can cause further problems. Poorly constructed Myspace profiles could potentially freeze up web browsers due to malformed CSS coding, or as a result of users placing many high bandwidth objects such as videos, graphics, and Flash in their profiles (sometimes multiple videos and sound files are automatically played at the same time when a profile loads). â⬠[i] Currently (March 2011) Myspace has an estimated 34 million users compared to Facebookââ¬â¢s 600 million for example, the reason for lower popularity might be the inability to satisfy the users and offer them satisfying experience. Myspace was also named the worst website by PC World in the list of 25 worst websites ever. Dimensions of Customer Value of Website Communication in Business-To-Business Relationships Summary During the last decade, websites have become widely accepted means of communication in business-to-business relationships and their use and importance is increasing constantly. At the same time, internet technologies advance rapidly, increasing customer expectations of website characteristics and possibilities, pressuring companies to actively further invest in their websites. Also to justify the website investments, companies have to design websites that fit to their customersââ¬â¢ need. For that they need to understand the value of websites for customers to enable companies to meet customer needs and expectations, direct resources efficiently, predict customer behaviour and achieve sustainable competitive advantage. The study portrays seven dimensions of CV of website communication in business-to-business relationships: convenience, efficiency, competence, confidence, comfort, appreciation and enjoyment. Content of the article I agree that the qualitative methods are the most suitable for uncovering customer value dimensions as they are more in-depth and provide a more rich description conversely to the quantitative methods which involve more statistical data. It is important to fulfill the customer desired end-states that the study brought out if you want to satisfy your consumers, such as convenience and efficiency because people like to get things easily without spending very much time, nowadays in the Internet age especially people are used to getting things fast and the one who offers information or products most conveniently gets the clients and profit. Also appreciation is an interesting point that was brought out because people like little details and like to get gifts, it could play an influential role in keeping the customers or winning them to your side. Although dimensions brought up in the article was limited to the customers in the study and donââ¬â¢t represent all the industries and customers, these dimensions generalize the dimensions which could apply to other contexts too. However I think more research should be done in this area as the importance of website communication is increasing and companies need to know what their customers want as websites are also often the first impression of the company. Examples from practice Websites have become widely accepted means of communication in business-to-business relationships: Time is money and the Internet offers the possibility to reach to the businesses more quickly and also find them more quickly as businesses also do their research online. ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â [i] Retrieved from: http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Myspace#Accessibility_and_reliability How to cite Positive Response Action, Essay examples

2001 A Space Odyssey (1183 words) Essay Example For Students
2001 A Space Odyssey (1183 words) Essay 2001 A Space Odyssey2001 : A Space Odyssey. I am going to be talking about Stanley Kubricks ââ¬Ë2001: aspace odysseyââ¬â¢, focusing (obviously) on the music, but alsothe sound. I will also be incorporating elements from MarkMillers article ââ¬Å"2001 a cold descentâ⬠2001: A Space Odyssey, introduced in 1968, is a highconcept production that begins by tracing the ââ¬ËDawn OfManââ¬â¢, which eventually leads to a journey through the solarsystem by a crew of astronauts aboard a spaceship boundfor Jupiter. The accompanying soundtrack plays as much of a role inthe development of suspense and intrigue as the actorsperformances. Three decades later, the soundtrack remainsone of the most recognized in cinematic history. Initially, Kubrick asked Alex North, who had written thescore for ââ¬ËSpartacusââ¬â¢, to compose the music for 2001. Although he commissioned an original score, Kubrickultimately opted to stick with the well-known classicalcompositions and cues heââ¬â¢d blocked in during production, making the soundtrack one of the most unconventional everproduced. The catalogue of film scores commissioned and thendumped in favor of someone elseââ¬â¢s work is extensive. Thesituation has a fascination all of itââ¬â¢s own: what might havebeen? Hermanns score for Torn Curtain for instance, andhere, Alex Norths score for 2001 are both examples. It was only as North watched the first commercialscreening that he discovered that his own score had beendiscarded. It was replaced by existing classical scores. The soundtrack features eight classical tracks includingGyorgi Ligetiââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Atmospheresâ⬠and Requiemâ⬠, Johan Straussââ¬â¢sââ¬Å"The Blue Danubeâ⬠and Richard Straussââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Also SprachZarathustraâ⬠(or ââ¬Å"Thus Spake Zarathustraâ⬠), which incidentallyElvis used to use to open his concert performances. The film combines eerie contemporary music withclassical waltzes and Ballet suites grunts and snarls withpneumatic hisses and synthesized beeps. One character hasa rough, throaty voice but the computer, Hal 9000, talks witha soft mellifluous tone (the classic characterization of thesmooth talking villain). In 2001, space is accurately depictedas a truly silent vacuum, but technological Man fills this worldwith the sound of circulating air systems, hummingcomputers and hissing doors. This sonic menace was latertaken to extreme by Ridley Scott in Alien which sharescommon elements with 2001, not least of which is one of theclassical pieces which Kubrick uses (when the Jupiter missionis first underway). 2001 begins with a desert plain, and the sound of windbroken only by the sound of ape men digging in the dirt for amorsel of vegetation. When a leopard snarls and attacks oneof the apemen it rocks the soundtrack. The film ends with Dave Bowman, breathing then steppinginto a fabricated room while the background noise windsdown to ever lower notes, which has the effect of slowingthe pace. We then see Bowman as an older man eating at atable (eating is a common theme in the film) and the soundof his cutlery clashing against the plate. Both of theseframing scenes are made suspenseful not just by their slowpacing, and their unfamiliar placement, but the eerie, subdued and anxious sound. The atmosphere in the room inwhich Bowman is eating is tense the sound is only broken bythe smash of the glass on the tiled floor. The soundpunctuates the atmosphere and shakes the viewer. Another famous scene that illustrates this contrast is thesequence in which Bowman is rescuing his murderedshipmate, Frank Poole. The silence of space, through whichPoole spins to his doom, is absolute. Where earlier the spacewalks were accompanied by the methodical breathing ofthe astronaut inside his helmet, here there is no sound, onlylifelesness, a pure void only broken by the anomaly of abright orange spacesuit tumbling away through space. .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e , .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e .postImageUrl , .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e , .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e:hover , .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e:visited , .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e:active { border:0!important; } .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e:active , .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ubf154aa10639046a185974d195f5262e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Buns Of Steel Sex Appeal EssayInside Bowmans craft, the Shipboard radar tracker beepsloudly, building in intensity. The juxtaposition of the silence ofa dying man floating alone in space, with no sound but theradar is one of the most violent contrasts in the film. As thedead man drifts into view through the window, the audiencesenses how alone man is in space. Later when Bowman maneuvers to reenter the shipwithout his helmet, the subtle sounds and whirs of the thecraft become louder. They abruptly give way to loudwarning sirens as he prepares for the worst. Again the sounddesign, built of authentic ambient structures, determines thetone and the overriding texture of the scene. By themselvesthe sounds are nuetral, but contextually they take on greateremphasis. The reason I am exploring the sound in such detail isbecause the musical and ambient parts of the soundtrackare very deliberate. Together they create an aural ensemblethat is greater than the sum of its parts. At many pointsthroughout the film, sound effects and music are usedentirely seperate from each other. On the mission to theClavius crater, we see images of Doctor Floyd talking withthe pilots of the shuttle, yet we cannot hear what they aresaying because all we hear is the music. The musical tracks we hear are placed at very deliberatepoints in the story. The film starts with Richard Straussââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËThusSpake Zarathustraââ¬â¢. We are presented with a view fromspace and we see the moon the earth and the sun inalignment. Here, the music creates an atmosphere of awe. We are presented with the majesty of the planets. This same piece of music plays as the apemen touch themonolith. Sustained low notes rising in pitch and volumetowards a crescendo. Here, it represents understanding. Later we hear the same piece of music representing yetanother theme, that of rebirth. It is plain to see that Kubrickintended to evoke different emotions and themes with thesame song. Johan Straussââ¬â¢s piece ââ¬ËThe Blue Danubeââ¬â¢, is usedto similar effect. It represents Humour (The stewardess, as shetends Floyd, and the advice for the zero gravity toilet) andit represents the eloquence of the machinery in thespacecraft. The sound design also contributes to the dialogue. Most ofthe dialogue is small talk between the characters. Bowmanand Poole rarely talk to each other. Nothing is even saidduring the space walks. It seems Kubrick wanted to isolatethe characters from each other. Miller suggests that the future society in kubricks 2001resembles that of the apemen in the first section of the film. The music seems to enmphasise this : at the start of the filmwe are presented with grand, majestic music, yet as the shiftoccurs to the future, the music becomes more gentle, morerefined. This however does not represent the humans buttheir machinery. The modern day apemen seem just asclumsy as their ancestors, while they shuffle around theconfines of their spacecraft. In contrast, their machinesmove with precision. As Miller puts it, ââ¬Å"the ape and the manare one and the sameâ⬠. Quoteââ¬Å"Thus the hypnotic circularity of straussââ¬â¢s waltz applies notto the euphoric roundabout of any dancing couple but tothe even wheeling of that big space station. Thus while thosetrancendent items sail through the void with the eternalgrace of seraphim, the stewardess attending doctor Floydstaggers down the aisleâ⬠. 2001: A space Odyssey is built up from cycles, and is itselfan encompassing cycle. Eating, birthdays, water, returningeven the ships themselves, everywhere the imageof a circle appears. The music also performs the samefunction : we start with ââ¬Å"thus spake zarathustraâ⬠and itbecomes our last image as the credits begin to roll. Films and Cinema

Swot Analysis of Lux free essay sample
SWOT analysis is a basic, straightforward model that provides directionand serves as a basis for the development of marketing plans. Itaccomplishes this by assessing an organizations strengths (what anorganization can do) and weaknesses (what an organization cannot do) inaddition to opportunities (potential favorable conditions for an organization)and threats (potential unfavorable conditions for an organization). SWOTanalysis is an important step in planning and its value is oftenunderestimated despite the simplicity in creation. The role of SWOTanalysis is to take the information from the environmental analysis andseparate it into internal issues (strengths and weaknesses) and externalissues (opportunities and threats). Once this is completed, SWOT analysisdetermines if the information indicates something that will assist the firm inaccomplishing its objectives (a strength or op nternal Analysis The internal analysis is a comprehensive evaluation of the internal environments potential strengths and weaknesses. Excessive dependence on beauty segment makes Lux vulnerable to changingcustomer tastes. 4. Technological change makes the existing products obsolete à ± Lux should focus ontechnological innovations like Body Wash. Conclusion It is not simply enough to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, andthreats of a company. In applying the SWOT analysis it is necessary to minimizeor avoid both weaknesses and threats. Weaknesses should be looked at in order toconvert them into strengths. Likewise, threats should be converted intoopportunities. Lastly, strengths and opportunities should be matched to optimizethe potential of a firm. Applying SWOT in this fashion can obtain leverage for acompany. As can be seen, SWOT analysis can be extremely beneficial to those whoobjectively analyze their company. The marketing manager should have roughoutline of potential marketing activities that can be used to take advantage of capabilities and convert weaknesses and threats

Answering the US Census Is Required by Law
Answering the US Census Is Required by Law Many people consider the questions from theà U.S. Census Bureauà either too time-consuming or too invasive and fail to respond. But responding to all census questionnaires is required by federal law. While it rarely happens, the Census Bureau can impose fines for failing to answer the census or the American Community Survey or for intentionally providing false information. According to Title 13, Section 221 (Census, Refusal or neglect to answer questions; false answers) of the United States Code, persons who fail or refuse to respond to the mail-back census form, or refuse to respond to a follow-up census taker, could be fined up to $100. Persons who knowingly provided false information to the census can be fined up to $500. But those fines have significantly increased as of 1984. The Census Bureau points out that underà Section 3571 of Title 18, the fine for refusing to answer a bureau survey can be as much as $5,000, and up to $10,000 for knowingly providing false information. Before imposing a fine, the Census Bureau typically attempts to personally contact and interview persons who fail to respond to census questionnaires. Follow-up Visits In the months following each census- which occurs every 10 years- more than 1.5 million census takers make door-to-door visits to all households that failed to respond to mail-back census questionnaires. The Census worker will assist a member of the household- who must be at least 15-years old- in completing the census survey form. Census workers can be identified by a badge and Census Bureau bag. Privacy Persons concerned aboutà the privacy of their answers should know that, under federal law, all employees and officials of the Census Bureau are prohibited from sharing a persons personal information with anyone else, including welfare agencies, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Internal Revenue Service, courts, police, and the military. Violation of this law carries penalties of $5,000 in fines and up to five years in prison. American Communities Survey Unlike the census, which is conducted every 10 years (as required by Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution), the American Communities Survey (ACS) is now sent annually to more than 3 million U.S. households. Those selected to participate in the ACS first receive a letter in the mail stating, ââ¬Å"In a few days you will receive an American Community Survey questionnaire in the mail.â⬠The letter will go on to state, ââ¬Å"Because you are living in the United States, you are required by law to respond to this survey.â⬠The envelope will boldly remind you that, ââ¬Å"Your response is required by law.â⬠The information requested by the ACS is more extensive and detailed thanà the handful of questions on the regular decennial census. The information gathered in the annual ACS focuses mainly on population and housing and is used to update the information gathered by the decennial census. Federal, state and community planners and policymakers find the more recently updated data provided by the ACS more helpful than the often 10-year-old data from the decennial census. The ACS survey includes about 50 questions applying to each person in the household and takes about 40 minutes to complete, according to the Census Bureau, which states: ââ¬Å"Estimates from the ACS contribute to providing an important picture of America, and an accurate response to the ACS questionnaire is important. When used in conjunction with the most recently available decennial census counts, information from the ACS documents how we live as a nation, including our education, housing, jobs, and many other issues.â⬠Online Census While the Government Accountability Office has questioned the cost, the Census Bureau is expected to offer an online response option for the 2020 decennial census. Under this option, people could respond to their census questionnaires by visiting a secureà website. Census officials hope the convenience of the online response option will increase the census response rate, and thus the accuracy of the census. Purpose The census is used to apportion members of the U.S. House of Representatives and for allocating funds for programs to help the needy, elderly, veterans, and more. The statistics also might be used by local governments to decide where infrastructure projects are needed.

Developed nations countries have gained the economy of scales and performed major functions in the long-term basis. The advantages of outsourcing are to reduce business operation expenses and thus corporations can sustain competitiveness. The paper will discuss the Vietnamese economy, particularly skills needed and skills gaps, and the level of unemployment and employment. Some theoretical literatures will help explain the reasons and results of Vietnamese economic growth; the paper tries to access the underlying forces which have challenged Vietnam authority to change from the central control to the market economy. 2. Why Vietnam ââ¬â An overview Vietnam officially becomes the 150 th member in WTO (World Trade Organization) on 11th January 2007. In order to join WTO, Vietnam government has to change its political, infrastructure and economic principals to fulfill the requirements of this international organization. ââ¬ËA sustained boom, with annual economic growth consistently around 7%-8% since 2000, has transformed Vietnam. It is over 20 years since Vietnamââ¬â¢s ruling communists abandoned collectivism and embarked on their doi moi market-based reforms, not unlike those China adopted a few years earlier.ââ¬â¢ [1] Additionally, Vietnam economy has gradually changed in order to adapt and join the worl d economy. From the control economy as of the principal of the communist ideals, Vietnam has undergone the reform and has let its economy to react in accordance with the law of supply and demand. Accordingly, ââ¬ËReal GDP growth is forecast to be robust in 2007, at an average of 7% a year, and will be driven mainly by industrial expansion. Business sentiment and consumer confidence will remain resilient, boosting investment and consumption.ââ¬â¢ [2] In fact, ââ¬ËMany Southeast Asian economies, namely, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam are emerging as an outsourcing destination for some Fortune-500 companies.ââ¬â¢ [3] The data from the Vietnamese economy has strongly reflected how outsourcing impacts on the level of unemployment and employment and skills needed and skills gaps, since the economy has moved so fast to the integration into the world economy. Vietnam has positioned itself as a primary host by luring more investment than other emerging econo mies and developing nations in the region in the late 1990s. It is overtaking the Philippines and Indonesia. ââ¬ËBy 2002, Viet Nam was the third largest recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI) flows in ASEAN [Association of South East Asian Nations], behind Singapore and Malaysia, strengthening its position as a significant investment base. Viet Nam has therefore achieved a key position both in terms of prime investment host within the region, and as a recipient of intraregional inflows.ââ¬â¢ [4] 3. Theoretical literatures 3.1. Macroeconomic principles A concept of scarcity, relatively in relation to an entire country and its people, becomes a condition which individual producer and consumer have to face in every decision. The opportunity cost of each decision can be considered as subjective value that individual must scarify when making any decision for the next best alternatives.

Leadership and managment Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Leadership and managment - Assignment Example Longmore (2005) states that ââ¬ËConflict is an inevitable aspect of lifeââ¬â¢. Coming to the organization, the name of the organization is Greenland and it deals with developing and maintaining the structures of houses and other buildings. The working structure of the organization is that there are sub contractors who take orders from the management to get them completed in the time given by the management of that specific organization. There are three departments of the organization. First department is the information department which gathers information regarding presence of any contract opportunity in any specific area. The head of this department is information manager whose role is to supervise all work related to his department and submit the weekly report to the management department. The second department is the management department whose role is to analyze the weekly report given to them by the information department and assign different contracts to different sub co ntractors depending upon their experience and capabilities. The head of this department is executive manager who is responsible for all the acts not only related to the management department but also related to the whole organization as he is the head of the organization too. The third and the last department is of the selected sub contractors who take contracts from the management department and get them completed in the given time frame by the management. The head of this specific department is the chief contractor whose role is to manage all other sub contractors and submit their weekly efficiency report to the management department. Now, letââ¬â¢s come to the conflict which has occurred among some of the employees of the management and the sub contractorsââ¬â¢ department. Bhushan (n.d.) said that ââ¬ËConflicts are inevitable in ones organizational life and personal lifeââ¬â¢. Here, the conflict is that one of the sub contractors has

Process of Science Lab Report Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Process of Science - Lab Report Example The small leafhoppers and black color leafhopper survive when there is alteration in global warming, while the bigger sized leafhopper and the brown in color are adversely affected and their population drastically reduces. If global warming continues, then at this rate the middle sized leafhoppers will probably be reduced and finished. Only the small leafhoppers will remain prominent unlike the parental generation where the bigger population was made up by middle sized leafhoppers. 3. What happened to the proportion of each type of leafhopper in subsequent generations under global warming conditions? Suggest a reason why the traits of the 30th generation make this population better adapted to its altered environment. The population of the large sized, medium sized and the brown colored leafhopper drastically reduce. The change in traits helps the leafhopper to adapt well. The leafhoppers becomes smaller in order to survive from other animals and birds which can feed on them. The brown and large did not survive because their color was so noticeable compared to the rest and therefore could be spotted easily by the predators while being small made it so difficult for the predators to spot them. The change of predators from birds to snakes I expect to favor the survival of the leafhoppers. This is because of the kind of locomotion depicted by the two predators. Birds as flying predators could easily spot the leafhopper from a distance and clear their population easily compared to the snakes which are scrawling predators. Having also in mind that leafhoppers are flying insects and cannot easily be spotted by a scrawling predator. The introduction of snakes therefore facilitated the increase in population of leafhopper. 5. Note the differences between the parental, 10th and 20th generations when the predator changed from a bird to a snake. What evidence supports the view that leafhopper size

Great Recession Essay Example for Free
Great Recession Essay Our 2007-2008 financial crisis is blamed on cheap mortgage credit, including lax underwriting process and government policies. In 2003, the government passed the American Dream Development Act, which provided financing to low-income families. Trying to help lower middle class families, the policy led to mortgage subprime mortgages. Financing to families with low credit rating at high interest rates. Since a large part of the population is middle to lower class, an exhaustible demand for new homes was created. As a result, creating a bubble in home price. Some of these mortgages include Interest only (monthly payment pays nothing to the principal, thus never decreasing the principal amount financed), and Adjustable Rate Mortgage, which consists of lowering or increasing rates every year depending on market interest rate. This type of mortgage can be beneficial in times like this; but back in 2006, when interest rates were so high, many mortgages monthly payments increase more than 10% in just one month. As Interest rates increased, subprime mortgages started to default exponentially since new homebuyers were unable to meet the monthly payments. This led to the collapse of home prices. This period of time is called the Great recession. The increase in subprime defaults reduces aggregate income and increases aggregate home prices, which in turn increases the level of prime defaults in the economy. This is called the subprime contagion. How did the government react? The government used fiscal policy to stabilize interest rates, reduce unemployment and increase GDP, they issued a program of Easy Credit, letting subprime borrow at a prime borrower spread. Also, they gave a Tax Rebate in 2008 of $8,000 for First time homebuyers, and for those in default they issued the Distress Relief program of HAMP (Home Affordable Modification Program). On the other hand, the Fed used monetary policy to reduce the economic crises and spur investments and consumption. They reduce the rate at discount window, increase money supply to reduce rates and they purchase mortgage-backed securities. Using Monetary Policy in a recession is more effective because it acts faster than fiscal policy. Fiscal policy has go through a various committees and has to be voted on to be made into law. As a conclusion, there is a contagion effect od subprime default due to the negative impact of subprime defaults on aggregate income, and monetary policy is the most effective when dealing with a recession. Monetary policy increases home aggregate prices in contrast to alternative government fiscal policies designed to loosen mortgage credit.

Brave New World and Gattaca :: Brave New World
Brave New World and Gattaca Huxleyà Living in a genetically perfect world is not necessarily a great achievement to mankind.à It makes one think, "where do you draw the line in the advancement of eugenics?" à Both worlds, the Brave New one and Gattaca, are alternative futures (clearly dystopic), written and shown in a believable way (not as much in BNW, though) through the use of satire.à Also, for GATTACA, the director incorporates the traditional elements of movie - a murder-mystery tied in with a love story PLUS a science fiction touch - very effectively.à Satire in Huxley's novel is glaringly obvious (mockery of the education system and the morals of today along with many more topics), as he writes with the purpose of teaching and humoring at the same time.à However, with GATTACA, the satirical messages are not immediately perceivable - even after having seen the movie three times. à à à à It is apparent that within the GATTACA institution, there is a definite discrimination against the genetic underclass; that naturally born.à Director Niccol is mocking the present-day view of prejudice and racism.à In the future of GATTACA, this prejudice is referred to as genoism - genetic discrimination.à Racism is a less specific form of genoism, and although such discrimination is outlawed, the laws are unenforceable because in this dystopian society, as it is in BNW, one's "genetic quotient" is known from birth.à The underclass people of this world are limited but aware of their social status and they are not particularly happy with it.à With the BNW, the lower castes seem to be (they are made to believe so) aware but they are conditioned to like their "light,...childishly simple" work. (p.204 BNW) à à à à Another satirical message explored in both works in that of publicity.à Our society is becoming increasingly accessible, yet controlled, through the use of surveillance of ID.à Huxley and Niccol are merely pointing out that it is incredibly disconcerting to think that one day, our identities will be verified through daily blood and urine samples.à On this topic, the one difference between the BNW and GATTACA is the in BNW, the Director or Controller is aware of the "individuals'" level of promiscuity or behaviour through the word of mouth.à There is also one major similarity; in both worlds, the Director is quite conscious of the existence of the Alphas and in the case of GATTACA, the elites.

Factors Influencing Media and Media Reports in Nigeria
By Chidera onyemenam As comprehensive as this topic might seem, factors influencing media as it concerns structure, number of outlets and contents can be broadly classified into two. a) EXTERNAL FACTORS à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à b) INTERNAL FACTORS EXTERNAL FACTORS: this covers the influence on the media as a result of the environment within which the mass media communication system operates. They include: à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à i)cultural influence à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à ii) influence of the Economy à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à iii) political influenceà à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à iv)Religious influence à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à v) à Legal influence à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à vi) Technological influence à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à vii)Influence of Security INTERNAL FACTORS: theses are influences on the media that take place inside the media organisation. It is not readily obvious to the entire populace. Some of these influences are even denied by the media workforce. Some of these factors include: à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à i)Media bias à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à ii) Ownership control à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à iii)Wealth iv) à Threats Both classified factors are instrumental to the state of the media in Nigeria. In this regard, the state of media in Nigeria differs from that in south Africa, since the conditions in which they both operate, differ. This chapter seeks to identify and explain these different conditions and factors and how they directly affect our country Nigeria.EXTERNAL FACTORS à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à CULTURAL INFLUENCE Culture as defined by Clyde Wuckhohn (1905-1960) an influential American anthropologist is the total way of life commonly followed by the members of a society. He also describes it as a social legacy that an individual acquires from his group. According to Clyde as stated by Ifedayo Daramola in his book ââ¬ËMedia and Society' (2005), culture includes values, beliefs, customs, religion, technology, and the roles people play in them.In the same vein, Sir Edward B Tylor defines culture as, à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à that complex whole which includes knowledge, arts morals, à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquiredà à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à by man as a member of a society. (1871) Sharing the same views with him, Chinoy (1967) defines culture asà à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à â⬠everything in the environment which is not in the formà à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à originally given it by nature. Therefore culture includes all the acquired traits which the members of a society have in common, but one of the inborn ones. In other words, cultural traits are traits that are generally accepted and embibed. Consequent upon these definitions, we can conclude that culture includes language, the philosophy, the religion, values, ideologies, moral codes, rituals, political beliefs and even style of greeting found among a people. This subsequently influences the thought pattern and idea of what is and what is not morally acceptable. For instance, the African culture strongly abhors expository attir es, whereas it means little or nothing to an American. The media exists for the society and so their first point of duty and allegiance is to their major audience. However, the bulk of the Nigerian audience is complex, stratified, differentiated and inter-related in so many ways. Considering this factor, the Nigerian media seeks to maintain a balance between their media report and the diverse cultures present.Making sure to rightly represent and not offend any culture in favour of another. In this regard, the media seeks to promote, all existing cultures since its products will ultimately be handed down to these diverse audience for consumption. With the difference in philosophies and ideologies, the mass media is careful to tailor their news and advert with all sensitivity to the philosophies of their target audience. With respect to culture also, the mass media has coined ways to disseminate information to all and sundry. In this light, the NTA news sub-stations in different States, broadcast news in the various languages common there. For example NTA Benue State broadcasts news in TiV and Idoma (the two most common tribes in Benue State). In conjunction with this localisation of news, local newspapers in different States exist to address the particular ideas and needs of that immediate society. These steps are taken to sustain audience patronage and increase coverage of a media outfit in a given region or society. The cultural influence on media has made it possible to reach all facets of society including the masses and minority. Television programmes like African Pot are solely dedicated to the promotion of diverse cultures. The media, thus stands to uphold promote and devote its time and space to adjust and fit into the boundaries of the peoples slated moral standards, values and belief. Anything contrary to this phenomenon will cause an uproar from all cultural groups and institutions within the country. LEGAL AND LEGISLATIVE INFLUENCE

Is Internet Better Than Teacher?
Is internet better than teacher? Today we are living in a modern world where science and technology are being used in every aspect of our daily life, which makes our life safe and comfortable. Internet is one of the key elements of our modern life. We use internet for communication, banking, entertainment, buying-selling, trading, tickets booking and for many other countless reasons. Most of all youngsters often use internet as a source of information for their educational purpose. Now a question arises if internet is better than teacher or not.Obviously internet is a great medium of learning or magnificent resources of teaching, but yet it no way equals to a living teacher. If we take internet as a medium of education, it can be called an ocean of information. Whatever we need in our school work or any assignment, all we need is a few strokes in the keyboard and in a second millions pages appear. Notes, lectures, video learning, audio assistance, dictionary and almost everything are available in the internet, is fairly sufficient to appease any inquisitive mind.In comparison to human teacher, internet is absolutely free, there is no time bound and different views for the same topic that provides us with more choices and give us an opportunity for broader analysis. Nowadays, it is possible to take exam or test on the internet, and with a digital checking system we can know our score almost immediately. This allows people to have college or even university degree from home. Some people claim the internet as to be a virtual teacher for many students.Although internet has been proved as an important factor in education system, but it can not be the alternate to a human teacher. It can be called merely a virtual teacher but not the real living teacher. Internet is like one way learning system, it is totally depends on the learner what or how he or she would learn. Unlike a human teacher there is no check and balance. So the possibility of exploitation is much great er.It is like a teacher who has no ears nor any emotion, that is to say internet is not interactive for dynamic and real teaching system. It can check a paper's spelling and grammar, but they cannot teach someone style or help clarify an idea. A real teacher interacts with students with their individual level of intelligence and their respective ability of learning. Some students are keen to learn whereas some are slow in progress, some are inattentive or some may have a tendency to despise the importance of education.Only a real human teacher can addresses these variations among the students by judging their attitude and he can take appropriate measures accordingly. Internet can enhance our knowledge, but it can not play the role of a teacher. During the schooling we not only learn the theories of science, mathematics or history but also learn discipline, morality, behavior and exchanging our views by improvising ideas, which is impossible in the virtual world of internet. Therefor e for the complete education, a teacher can not be replaced by internet

How to Celebrate Shakespeares Birthday
How to Celebrate Shakespeares Birthday Shakespeare was born and died on April 23 and over 400 years on, we are still celebrating his birthday. Joining up with a Bard birthday bash is the best way to celebrate, but if youââ¬â¢re unable to attend an event, throw your own party! Here, a few creative ways to celebrate Shakespeareââ¬â¢s birthday. 1. Visit Stratford-upon-Avon If you live in the UK or are visiting the area in the month of April, then there is no better place in the world to celebrate William Shakespeares birthday than his hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon. On the weekend of his birthday, this little market town in Warwickshire (UK) pulls out all the stops. Hundreds of people travel to the town and line the streets to watch the town dignitaries, community groups, and RSC celebrities mark the Bards birth by starting the parade in Henley Street where the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust can be found. They then snake their way through the streets of the town to Holy Trinity Church, the Bards final resting place. The town then spends the weekend (and most of the week) entertaining its visitors with street performances, RSC workshops, world-class theater and free community theater.à 2. Perform a Scene If you cant make it to Stratford-upon-Avon or one of the other Shakespeare birthday events happening around the world, then why not throw your own party? Dust off that old Shakespeare tome and act out your favorite scene. Couples can try the famous balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, or the entire family can attempt the tragic ending from Hamlet. Remember: Shakespeare didnââ¬â¢t write his plays to be read they were to be performed! So, get into the spirit and start acting. 3. Read a Sonnet Shakespeareââ¬â¢s sonnets are some of English literatureââ¬â¢s most beautiful poetry. Itââ¬â¢s a delight to read aloud. Ask everyone at the celebration to find a sonnet that they like and read it to the group. If youââ¬â¢re not sure how to do justice to Shakespeares works by reading aloud, we have some advice to make your performance sparkle. 4. Visit the Globe This might be difficult if you donââ¬â¢t live in London or plan to be there. But it is possible to build your own Globe Theaterà and keep the family entertained all afternoon print out all the parts you need and reconstruct Shakespeares wooden O. You can also take a virtualà photo tour of the reconstructed Globe Theatre in London. 5. Watch a Branagh Film Kenneth Branagh has made some of cinemaââ¬â¢s best Shakespeare film adaptations. MEDICATION ERRORS Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
MEDICATION ERRORS - Essay Example They can also be classified from a contextual perspective, in terms of the medicines, time, place and people involved (Spath, 2011). Modal classification is the third type, which refers to the manner in which the error took place, for example, errors can occur by substitution, omission or repetition. Patientsââ¬â¢ safety and medical errors represent a subject that has recently gained both public and scientific attention. This is due to the fact that numerous medical errors have occurred, and lately on a regular basis (Jox, Schneider, Borasio & Dietz, 2010). These errors are accompanied by an increased cost in treatment, in addition to a number of moral consequences. Several barriers concerned with patient safety and medication errors have been identified. These include poor leadership and absence of feedback on incidences concerning these errors. Feedback would enable the medical system to monitor the occurrence of these errors on a national level, and assist the authorities in fo rmulating the appropriate preventative measures. Voluntary reporting systems have been created by organizations such as the Institute of Safe Medical Practice Canada (ISMP Canada) and results have shown that these systems can help reduce the number of mistakes in medication from human error (David, n.d). Medication error reports are reviewed by the Division of Medication Error Prevention and Analysis (DMEPA) (US Food and Drug Administration, n.d). It includes a prevention program which evaluates cases of medical errors, casualties, and uses this data to formulate preventative measures against medication errors. Fortunately, most medication errors are due to omission as opposed to commission; hence, there is a certain level of preventability for the occurrence of these mistakes. To formulate preventative measures, one must analyze the underlying cause of these errors. These errors usually occur upon failure of a medical service provider to detect the state of disease, hence, prescrib es the incorrect drug therapy, failure to detect the mechanism of drug interaction, negligence to patientââ¬â¢s drug allergies and general patient knowledge deficits (Harn, n.d). The above mentioned errors can be avoided if time is taken to counsel the prescriber and improving his/her working conditions (Harn, n.d). In order for the prescriber to reduce the probability of medication errors occurring, he/she can learn ways to keep focused on the patient and make sure diagnosis is made with out any external distractions. The work performed by medical professionals can be extremely stressful at times and these conditions make them prone to making mistakes. Creating a stress free environment can help reduce the number errors. This can be achieved by reducing the amount of caffeine intake and maintaining a healthy diet, improving relations among employees, ensuring that the employees get adequate sleep, working goals should be realistic to avoid overworking employees and bad habits, s uch as alcohol intake, should be prohibited during or before working hours. The patient can also play a role in preventing medication errors by gaining knowledge on the medication that has been prescribed to him/her. He or she should be aware of the purpose of the medication and what disease he/she is taking the medication for. The patient should also try to use the same pharmacy for one prescription, this way pharmacists can detect any inconsistencies that the doctor might have made

Practical lab writeups - see pdf files Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Practical lab writeups - see pdf files - Essay Example The presence of 3 1H peaks indicates that it is not a dinitrate product but a mononitrate product. The presence of the 1H singlet and two doublets indicates that one H is apart and the other two are on neighbouring C atoms, so NO2 is at position 4. So the product is 1,2-dimethoxy-4-nitrobenzene, consistent with the melting point. The melting point of the semicarbazide derivative of compound A was found to be 224-225 Ã ºC, which means that compound A is likely to be o-chloro-benzaldehyde or p-hydroxy-benzaldehyde. According to the 1HNMR spectrum, with benzene proton peaks around 7 ppm and aldehyde proton singlet, the second functional group should also contain one proton, showing up as a singlet. Therefore, the second functional group is a hydroxy-group, so compound A is p-hydroxy-benzaldehyde. This hydroxyl-group also gives the possibility to from the bicyclic structure of compound B. The H atom of NH will exchange with solvent, so if D2O is added it may be replaced with D. This only influences the peak of the H of NH, which will become a doublet with the second peak (of D) at lower intensity and at higher field (lower
